A big playground

It is the largest lake lying entirely in Switzerland, with easy-access beaches and plenty of room to learn and progress. It is shared between three cantons, which matters for the rules.

Lake Neuchâtel

The wind on the lake

Four situations come back again and again, each with its own timing and character.

Summer

Thermal breeze

It mostly picks up in the afternoon, often around 12 to 20 knots.

NE

Bise

It can settle in for several days; from autumn to winter it blows stronger and steadier.

NW

Joran

A north-westerly coming down from the Jura that can deliver great sessions.

W / SW

Westerly fronts

The wind veers west or south-west and can build.

⚠ Summer storms build quickly: always check the weather before heading out.

The spots

South shore

Cudrefin and Portalban

Open areas, popular in westerly or south-westerly winds.

In a bise

Downwind to Yverdon

With a steady bise, the lake becomes one of the best downwind runs in French-speaking Switzerland.

The rules

Kitesurfing has been allowed on Swiss waters since February 2016, but each canton can restrict it. The rule depends on the shore you launch from.

NE

Neuchâtel shore

Allowed; keep 200 m away from licensed passenger boats and landing stages.

FR

Fribourg shore

Open since 15 February 2016, in daylight and clear weather (8 am to 9 pm), with no-go zones to protect birds, shown on official maps.

VD

Vaud shore

It has its own regulation: check it before launching.

  • A buoyancy aid is mandatory.
  • Waterbird reserves are closed unless authorised.

What gear for this lake

With a 12 to 20-knot breeze, a 9 m² kite covers most sessions; many riders add a 7 m² for strong bise days. For wetsuits, a 4/3 mm is enough from April to October, and a hooded 5/4/3 mm keeps you riding through autumn and winter.
