Lake Walen and Lake Constance are two very different but rewarding kite spots in eastern Switzerland. One offers powerful mountain winds, the other wide waters in the tri-border region. Here are the spots, wind info and the key rules.
Lake Walen: powerful wind between the Churfirsten
The Walensee is known for its powerful, sometimes gusty winds. With Föhn and good thermals, the wind accelerates between the steep flanks. Popular areas are around Walenstadt and Mols. Because of the gusts, the lake suits experienced kiters.
Lake Constance: water as far as the eye can see
Lake Constance (Bodensee) offers huge surfaces and both thermal and frontal winds. Spots can be found near Romanshorn and Altnau. Conditions range from gentle thermal breeze to punchy pre-frontal situations.
Be sure to respect the Lake Constance rules
Lake Constance is subject to strict regulations. Kiting is only allowed in certain zones and at certain times, and in winter nature reserves protect waterfowl. Check the rules currently in force for your canton or shore before every session.
Gear for the eastern Swiss lakes
For the gusty mountain winds of the Walensee, a kite with good depower and direct handling helps a lot. On Lake Constance in light wind, larger kites or a kitefoil are an advantage. A 4/3 mm wetsuit suits most of the year.
