In Switzerland, lake water stays cool for much of the year. Choosing the right wetsuit is therefore essential to enjoy wingfoil, kitesurf or SUP comfortably from spring to autumn — even in winter for the most motivated. Here’s how to make the right choice.
Understanding neoprene thickness
Thickness is expressed in millimetres, often as two or three numbers (e.g. 5/4/3) for the thickness at the torso, legs and arms. The higher the number, the warmer the suit:
- 2 mm / shorty: high summer, water above 20 °C.
- 3/2 mm: spring and summer on our lakes, the most versatile.
- 4/3 mm: mid-season, water between 12 and 18 °C — an excellent compromise for Neuchâtel.
- 5/4 mm (+ hood): winter and cold water below 12 °C, for the year-round motivated.
Cut and zip
A good suit must fit snugly without restricting you — water entry means cold. Mind the zip: back-zip (easy to put on) or chest-zip (more watertight and warmer). Glued and taped seams improve insulation.
Don’t forget the accessories
In cold conditions, neoprene boots, gloves and hood complete your suit to extend the season. Discover our wetsuits.
