Want to get into wingfoiling and wondering which gear to buy? This guide walks you through the essential components step by step and how to choose the right sizes for your weight and your spot.
The wing
The wing is your handheld sail. To start, 4.0 to 5.0 m² is a good all-round range (less for lighter riders, more for heavier ones). Look for a stable profile and good build quality – it makes handling far easier.
The foilboard
Beginners ride best on a high-volume board – a simple rule is your body weight in kilos plus 30 to 40 litres. You stand stable and progress faster. Later you move to more compact, low-volume boards.
The foil
The foil consists of a mast, fuselage, front wing and stabiliser. To begin: a large front wing (approx. 1,700–2,200 cm²) gives early lift and stability at low speed. An aluminium mast of 75–85 cm is a good compromise between control and price.
Leash, wetsuit and safety
A board leash and a wing leash are mandatory. For Swiss lakes you need a wetsuit (3/2 mm in summer, 4/3 mm in the shoulder season) and ideally an impact vest and a helmet.
Sizes by weight and wind
As a rough guide: at 70–85 kg and 15–20 knots, a 5.0 wing, a board around 100–110 L and a front wing around 1,800 cm² work well. With more wind or more skill, size down. When in doubt, we are happy to advise you.
